Job Racketeers Get  N25m Bail

Five suspected job racketeers arraigned on Monday before Justice Gabriel Kolawole of a federal high court in Abuja, have been granted bail in the sum of N5 million each with two sureties for each in like sum.

The suspects, Alex Oki, Ogbonna Agwu, Shuiabu Mohammed, Kehinde Jamah and David Kachia, alongside others said to be at large, were arraigned by the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, for allegedly impersonating officials of agency, and in the process, swindled unsuspecting members of the public of various sums of money under the guise of helping them secure employment in FIRS.

The suspected job racketeers pleaded not guilty to the five count charge and their lawyer, Mr. Ebenezzar Abadaki applied for their bail. He urged the court to grant his clients bail in very liberal terms noting that they had been in the custody of the State Security Service, SSS, since the 9th of September. The lawyer also told the court that the security agency had earlier granted them bail which they were unable to fulfill due to the stringent nature of the bail conditions and pointed out that that the suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty and that bail should be granted them to safeguard their liberty pending the determination of the case.

In his ruling, the trial judge granted them bail in the sum of N5 million. The court also ordered that out of the two sureties required of each of the suspect, that one must be a civil servant, either in the Federal, State or Local Government civil service and must be at least of grade level 10 and must own a property which value must not be less than N10 million Naira. He also ordered that the suspects be remanded at Kuje Prison pending their fulfillment of the bail conditions.
