Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, on Wednesday in Abuja denied any involvement with a private company operating as Natachi Consulting Limited, over sms being circulated to members of the public by the company, purportedly in conjunction with the agency, to pay the sum of N40,000 into the company’s account domiciled at Guaranty Trust Bank with account number 0024569106 and sort code 058083231.

Stakeholders who received the sms told PM News that they were happy when NAFDAC recently advertised that it is going to register consultants who would provide regulatory services to companies regulated by the agency, a development which they had hoped would ordinarilly be a good thing, since it will bring order and sanity to service provision to manufacturers and marketers of food, drugs and cosmetics.

However, they claimed that when the information for the registration was released, applicants were told to submit completed form to NAFDAC, but pay N40,000.00 (Forty thousand Naira) processing fee into the account of a private company.

Reacting to the development, the Acting Director General of NAFDAC, Mrs. Hauwa Kere who is also the Director of Drug Evaluation and Research denied any involvement with the consulting company. She told PM News that her agency had relationship with Natachi Consulting Limited in the past, sometimes in 2010 when NAFDAC worked with the company in one of the agency’s corporate social responsibility projects and at another instance when the company conducted a training programme on Strategic Planning for staff of the agency.

She however categorically denounced the ongoing scenerio noting that NAFDAC does not communicate with stakeholders via sms, but only through correspondence written in the agency’s letterheaded papers.

She also denied any ongoing collaboration with the company in manufacturers and marketers registration process noting that NAFDAC which maintains zonal offices and currently has 339 NAFDAC Desks in some Local Government Areas across the country, has all it requires to register and regulate manufacturers and marketers of food products and drugs.

Mrs. Keri adviced the agency’s stakeholders and the general public to ignore any sms purported to have emanated from the agency as that is not the usual means of the agency’s communication with the public.
