Abuja Blast Update

Two suspected terrorists who detonated improvised explosive device at a crowded shopping plaza within the Wuse II District of the Abuja metropolis were shot at by personnel of the Guards Brigade on patrol duty in the area, killing one of the suspected bombers in the process and arresting the other.

The suspected terrorists stormed the busy shopping mall on a power bike and planted an Improvised Explosive Device  by the entrance of the mall which exploded killing 21 persons and leaving another 17 seriously injured. Many vehicles were also damaged with windshield blown away from other sets of vehicles within the vicinity of the blast.

The suspected terrorists  were reported to have attempted to flee the scene of the incident before they ran into the security operatives on patrol duty within the area who fired shots at them and killing one of the suspected bombers in the process and arresting the other.

A bag containing IEDs was also recovered from the suspects.

Some of the victims are receiving treatment at the National Hospital, Wuse General Hospital and Maitama General Hospital, where movement had been restricted.

Meanwhile, the Managing Editor, Northern Operations, of New Telegraph newspaper, Mr. Suleiman Bisala, has been identified as one of the victims of the bomb blast.

His brother,  Mohammed Bisala, who confirmed the death to reporters said Suleiman's corpse was found at the Maitama Hospital mortuary. Mohammed also said that the Suleiman's remains would be buried in Abuja on Thursday.

Before his appointment in the New Telegraph in 2013, Bisala was Deputy Editor of Daily Trust.
